PORT OF CANTON .
I enclose copy of a note from the American Group,
containing an enquiry with regard to the future connexion
between the Canton-Hankow and Canton-Kowloon Railways.
The position, as far as it is known to me, is as follows:- 1. The original intention of the promoters of the Canten- Kowloon Railway was that it should form the southern section
of a through line from Peking to Hongkong, and the prospectus
of the lean, issued in March, 1997, included a clause te this
effect.
2. The line was opened in 1910/11.
3. The Railway has an agreement with the longkong
Government as to through ruming arrangements with the line
scross British Kowloon.
4. The Yueh-Han Railway (Canton Provincial Railway) which
leads to the northern boundary of the province, was opened
about the same time, and the project for a loop or girdle line
to connect the two railways at Canton has been under negotiation
since that date.
5. The Haluang Railways Loan Agreement contemplated
connexion between ite Hanan-Humpeh Section and the Yush-Han line.
6. In June, 1916, Layers received an assurance from the
Minister of Commications that, if the Provincial Company
